Sharing treats

We had a funny conversation the other day. Here is how it started.

Maddox starts to fuss. Mark is sitting on the other end of the couch eating his fruit snacks.

He says, “Momma, Baby hungry”

I’m laughing to myself, good insight Mark, “Do you think he wants some fruit snacks?”

Mark, ” Yes!”

Me, “Can he have one of YOUR fruit snacks?”

Mark, “NO!”

If Maddox only knew he had a good reason to be crying! I can just see this scenerio playing out again in the near future. Maddox will be crying, "Mark won't share his fruit snacks!"

Uh Oh, Maddox starts to slide, picture moment is over.....

Big brother starts to wig out because his brother is touching him! Mark's yelling, "OW!", Please...he is not hurting you! I think Mark was more worried about protecting his fruit snacks!

**I did explain to Mark that Maddox doesn’t have any teeth yet, so he can’t eat any fruit snacks. I thought I better try incase he gets any wise ideas and decides to actually share one day when I am not in the room!

Playtime

There are a few toys of Mark’s that he hasn’t seemed to want to let go. This safari jungle mat is one of them.

Mark seems to think there is room for the both of them!

"See!" Mark is trying to point out some things for Maddox to look at.

Mark is checking himself out in the mirror!

Maddox will start moving his arms and legs and it makes Mark scramble! He doesn't like it when the baby touches him! See him moving away from his arm?

Looks like little brother has already figured out to get big brother off his toy! Mark is working his way off the mat. As if Maddox has cooties or something!

**on a side note, Mark likes to “hold baby” as he says, but it seems to bother him if the baby initiates contact….not sure whats up with that…..any ideas?

Car Ride

Labor Day Weekend was our first trip for us as a family of FOUR! I was a little anxious about how Maddox would do.

Would we have to stop every hour? Would he scream his head off at times?

oh no….who knew Maddox would be the perfect angel and Mark would be the one who needed entertainment.

Mark provided most of the entertainment for us!!!! I will let the pictures tell the story of our 3.5 hour trip.

I had no idea I had such a diva on my hands. Mark insisted on wearing my sunglasses. For real. Not just for fun or to play with. He was seriously using these to block the sun!

After he finished going through the bag of toys and books I brought, it got dark and he just started grabbing for anything he could reach!

Here he is examining a bottle.

I flip the light on and I see this picture! Big brother Mark trying on baby brother's bib!

I hear some rustling around. I flip the light on....I see my 3 year old with a handful of cash money! After a dinner stop I threw Bernie's wallet in the diaper bag. Little did I know we had some sticky fingers in our car!

Here Mark is happy with himself. Mark insists on his BIG boy drink! Dadda carried this precious boy out of Subway kicking and screaming. We have a toddler on our hands!

Wow! 30 miles from Papa's house and our big boy is LOSING IT! We couldn't figure out why...other than being in his car seat too long!

Here is my big boy the next day. Wearing Thomas the Train sunglasses that are just his size! Much happier riding on a short trip to a soccer game!

Photo Shoot

We have this amazing photographer in our house. He goes by the names Bernie, Matt and Dadda. The only downfall for having this fantastic photographer is that we have a hard time booking ourselves in our busy schedule!

Getting all the equipment out at just the right time when the boys are in the mood to be photograph doesn’t always happen.

Apparently neither of them wanted to be photographed together!

So this photo shoot was a week late for Maddox’ 1 month shots. Maddox was fussy and only wanted to be held. Mark liked being on the table, but DID not want to get close to his brother.

"Mark, you want to take a picture with your brother?"

This is the response we get!

I thought I would share some of the more humorous shots that captured the moment. The upside to having this photographer in house is that it didn’t cost us a dime and we can always try again later!

Maddox's funny face. Guess he didn't want to pose next to that bear.

I was hoping to get a sweet shot of him a cuddled up. Instead he is showing off how well he holds his head up. Too bad he was very upset with me for putting him there!

Craft Project #1

It’s been TOO hot to do much out side these days. Temps reaching 100 degrees, heat index of 110+, humidity is suffocating! Not mention the heat advisory means I am not suppose to take my two boys outside in this crazy mess, they are both in the ‘at-risk’ category. (Especially the baby)

So, I am finally slowly getting my energy back and we are getting into a schedule (sort of). So yesterday I attempted to do some crafts with my big boy. He loves to watch movies, which is nice when Momma needs to get something done without him under foot. But I know he needs more interaction and play time. Mark is a typical boy who prefers to do physical activity, but with this weather, I must find other means of entertainment.

I have made more lego houses than I care to count.

Mark was very proud of this house. We used every single lego piece we own!

I searched the internet for idea of craft projects we could do. I quickly realized two things.

#1: I need to beef up my craft supplies. I can’t believe a mommy of a toddler doesn’t have yarn, paper plates, paint, tape, glitter, child safety scissors and some Elmers glue! I did have construction paper, crayons, markers, pasta and foam shapes.

#2: Mark has been very fortunate to have been surrounded by some crafty ladies! He had already done a lot of the craft ideas I found on the web. Between Sunday School, Mother’s Day Out and our current childcare, he has done lots of creative, cute crafty projects! (just not that many with me!)

This picture was taken on our way home from church. Very fun mask!

and he STILL loves these binoculars!!!

I decided to go the simple round and work on the basic colors and shapes. He LOVED it! I thought I would post this in case any other families are looking for indoor activities to do with their kiddos.

I learned a few things.

#1. The project can’t be too simple for his age. I thought this was too easy and I needed to do more (I guess because I taught 1st-3rd graders.) but I was wrong. He had fun and he learned something. Mission accomplished.

#2. He has a very short attention span. Don’t get me wrong, I have seen him sit and color a Thomas Coloring Book for a good 20 minutes. But for this activity, he was ready to get down from the table before all the gluing and coloring was finished. No hard feelings….I just realized what I was dealing with a three year old!

Here is what we did.

I scrambled up all the shapes and we first sorted them into groups of colors. I also worked on him saying those color words. His new speech therapist would have been proud!

Then I scrambled the shapes up again and we sorted them into groups of shapes. Again, working on saying those shape words. All of the new words difficult for him but he did at least attempt to say them.)

Then we glued the foam shapes onto the corresponding colored paper shapes. Then I let him color those shapes with the matching color marker. I found these markers on sale for $1. I am not a big fan of Mark and markers. But for $1, I can afford to let him use these.

The finished product. He enjoyed making some of the shapes into people.( I made the people, Mark did the decorations!) On his own gave the people names. The names he gave the people: Ashton, Momma, Makray and Lana! I guess some of his favorite people! It was too cute. We will be keeping these around the house to keep working on saying the colors and shapes.

Results: We had a very quick, fun activity. Worked on sorting, fine motor skills, colors and shapes. Mark caught on very quickly and had no problem sorting things into the appropriate category.

Stay tuned! More indoor craft ideas to come!

Hard at work

My big boy, Mark, really gets into his work lately.

These pictures need no explanation!

*He was being so cute while working on his masterpiece. I want to remember this small moment forever. So fun, sweet and innocent. (He did not want to look up at the camera.) This was just one of those everyday moments that melts my heart.

ps-sorry for the delinquent posting…..we haven’t really figured out our routine yet with two kids! Lots of drafts in the works to come, so stay tuned!

Coexisting

Mark and Maddox are currently coexisting.

We think that Mark has accepted that this new baby is here to stay. But he isn’t too concerned about him.

This picture sums up how Mark has handled the new addition. Not love, not hate...just hanging out. So far my boys are pretty even kill, nobody's world has been too rocked.

Every once in a while we catch a cute moment of Mark wanting to hold his brother or touch his head.  I know it won’t be long before they are best friends!

1 Week Old!

Wow! Time flies! We survived the first week of the newborn stage!

Lucky for me, my mom has been here helping.

This week has been full of diaper changes, sleep deprivation, sore nipples and lots of visitors!

It’s so true how different each child is. So far here are some of the differences between my two boys at this stage .

Maddox:

1. loves to be swaddled, cuddled and held close.

2. has latched on to breast feeding!

3. has regular bowel movements.

4. LOVES to sleep on his belly.( This makes mom and and dad nervous but it’s a fact)

5. doesn’t keep his eyes open much. (I do see them a little more of them each day.)

Mark

1. did NOT like to be swaddled. He could lay independently on his bouncy seat very happily.

2. never did figure out breast feeding.

3. still has trouble with BMs, poor guy, I need to invest in stock in Miralax!

4. Slept just fine on his back. Actually slept most of his first few weeks in the bouncy seat or his car seat.

5. had his eye wide open from the first minute!

Here are some new pictures:

Big Brother Mark

We are home and everyone is making the adjustment nicely.

Lots of people have been asking how Mark is doing with his new baby brother. Here are a few pictures for your enjoyment, you be the judge!

4 out 5 guys were happy!!! :)

My Three Year Old!!!

WOW!  Yesterday was my first born, precious little baby turned THREE years old!!! Time has flown by!

Let me just share with you a few of the things my big boy does right now.

Cheese! Mark is showing off the hat that came in one of his bday cards! Thanks Aunt Shelby!

He gets excited about the littlest things. For example, he will bring me a leaf off a tree-LOOK MOMMA~~ and throws his hands up in exuberation!

His vocabulary is growing leaps and bounds!

His favorite phrases:

  • ‘All Aboard!’ –of course referring to trains.
  • ‘I’m awake!’–when he gets up in the morning or from a nap.
  • ‘I find it! I do it! I fix it!’ are all said at least 10 times a day (EACH!)

He seems compassionate towards babies. Not sure how that will carry over to a baby that actually stays at our house, permanently. But the child care workers tell me how sweet Mark is to the babies. Bringing them toys, telling other people to be quiet when they are sleeping, it’s funny.

He loves to watch cartoons! Tom & Jerry, Thomas the Train and Blue Clues are the top favorites. The movies Cars, Jungle Book and Charlotte’s Web are his top choices. I am fully aware that kids do not need to watch TV. But at times….it has been helpful and we do have limits. (and he has learned LOTS of good things from these shows)

He thrives off routine.

He is staring to be Dadda’s shadow. He tries to help him with EVERYTHING! Cooking, yard work, & home projects. He is so much like his Dad its scary!

He is throwing more tantrums. (and more extreme reactions to every situation that upsets him)

We are starting to be able to reason with him.  He seems to be understanding more and more, IF you do this….THEN this will happen.

He enjoys reading books. So much that I think he might know all of the ones on his bookshelf by heart. He even ‘reads’ the story back to me. Telling me to, “SHHH” when I try to jump in!

I can’t wait to see how he develops into a big brother. I REALLY can’t wait to watch these two boys grow up together!

I know the next couple of years will be challenging, but so VERY fun! We are so blessed!

Mark is enjoying the things he took home from Sunday School!

Marked LOVED this birthday cake with a real working train on it! Grandma and Papa worked very hard on the cake! Thank you! Mark LOVED it!!!!!
